Saree Size & Blouse Guide

One saree, your perfect fit

A saree is free size, so it fits every body beautifully. The only part that needs your measurements is the blouse. This guide explains what comes in the box, how much length you need and how to measure for a blouse that fits like it was made for you, because it will be.

What’s in Your Saree

Six yards, four parts

Every saree is one long length of fabric. Here is how it is laid out, from the end you tuck in to the blouse piece at the other end.

Body

The main length that is tucked, pleated and wrapped around you. Butta, jaal or plain weaves usually fill this part.

Border

The woven edge that runs along the length and frames the drape. Zari borders catch the light as you move.

Pallu

The decorative end that falls over your shoulder. It is usually the richest, most detailed part of the weave.

Blouse piece

About 0.8 metres of fabric at the very end, to be cut off and tailored into your blouse. It comes unstitched.

Some designs come as a single length of about 6.3 metres with the blouse piece in the running fabric. Exact measurements are always listed on the product page, and may differ by a few centimetres because fabric is woven and finished in batches.

Will It Fit Me?

The right length for your height

A 5.5 metre saree gives a graceful classic drape for almost everyone. Use this as a simple guide.

Up to 5′3″5.5 m

Plenty of length for full pleats and a generous pallu in a classic drape.

5′4″ – 5′7″5.5 m

The standard fit. Comfortable for every everyday and festive drape.

5′8″ and above5.5 m or 6.3 m

5.5 m works well; choose a 6.3 m single-length design for deeper pleats or a longer pallu.

Draping tip: wear the footwear you will wear on the day while draping. Your petticoat sets the hemline, so the saree should just touch the floor in your heels or flats.

For Your Tailor

How to measure for your blouse

Use a soft measuring tape and wear the bra you plan to wear with the saree. Keep the tape level and snug, never tight. Better still, ask someone to help.

  1. ShoulderAcross your back, from the tip of one shoulder to the tip of the other.
  2. BustAround the fullest part of your bust, with the tape level all the way round.
  3. Under-bustSnugly around your ribcage, just below the bust.
  4. WaistAround the point where you want the blouse to end, usually 1–2 inches below the under-bust.
  5. Armhole & sleeveAround the top of your arm at the shoulder joint, then from the shoulder tip down to where you want the sleeve to end. Measure around your arm at that point too.
  6. Blouse lengthFrom the shoulder, close to the neck, over the bust down to the waist point.
  7. Neck depthFrom the shoulder, close to the neck, down to your preferred front neckline. Do the same at the back.

Finishing Touches

Petticoat, fall & pico

A few small details make a big difference to how your saree drapes and how long it lasts.

Petticoat

Choose one close to your saree’s colour, with a drawstring that sits firmly at your waist. Its length should reach the floor in the footwear you will wear.

Fall

A strip of fabric stitched along the inner hem. It adds a little weight so the pleats fall neatly, and protects the border. Recommended for silk sarees.

Pico

A neat machine edging on the raw ends of the saree that stops the fabric from fraying. Most tailors do fall and pico together.

Cutting the blouse piece

The blouse piece is woven at the end of the saree. Your tailor will cut along the line where the design changes. Allow about a week for stitching.

Please note: fall, pico and blouse stitching are not included unless the product page says so. A saree that has been cut, stitched or altered cannot be exchanged, so check your saree carefully before sending it to your tailor.
