Know the fabric before you fall in love

Every saree begins with its fabric. It decides how the drape falls, how the zari catches the light and how comfortable you feel from the first ritual to the last dance. This guide explains the fabrics and weaves we work with, so you can choose with confidence.

The Fabric Families

Five fabrics, five moods

Each fabric has its own personality. Here is how they look, feel and wear, so you can match the saree to the moment.

The wedding classic

Banarasi Silk

Inspired by the centuries-old weaving tradition of Varanasi, our Banarasi sarees are known for rich zari buttas, flowing floral jaal and grand brocade-style borders and pallus. Most are woven on a soft silk blend base, which keeps the regal look while making the saree lighter and easier to drape than a traditional heavy brocade.

Kanjivaram Silk

Our Kanjivaram-style sarees take their inspiration from the famous silks of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu: bold contrast borders, temple motifs, zari checks and grand, heavily woven pallus. They have a fuller body and a deep lustre that looks stunning in person and in photographs.

Soft Silk

Light, fluid and forgiving, soft silk falls into pleats easily and stays comfortable through a long day. Expect a gentle sheen, jacquard or zari-woven motifs and a weight that suits first-time saree wearers and seasoned drapers alike. It is our most-loved choice for festive days that last from morning to night.

Organza

Organza is a sheer, crisp fabric with a soft glow. It holds its shape, so pleats stay sharp and the pallu seems to float. Paired with zari borders or delicate woven motifs, it is a graceful, modern choice for day functions, haldi and mehendi ceremonies and evening receptions.

What the names mean. Names such as Banarasi and Kanjivaram describe the weaving style and design tradition that inspired a saree. Unless a product page specifically says so, our sarees are not GI-certified handloom products from Varanasi or Kanchipuram. Many are woven on a silk blend base for a lighter feel and an honest price.

The exact fabric of every saree is always listed under Fabric or Material on its product page. If you are unsure, message us before you order and we will gladly tell you more.

The Art of the Weave

A little glossary of saree language

You will see these words on our product pages. Here is what each one means, and what to look for when the saree is in your hands.

Jacquard

Patterns woven directly into the fabric on a jacquard loom, so the design is part of the saree itself, not printed on top.

Zari

Metallic thread woven in to create gold, silver or antique-gold motifs, borders and pallus. It gives a saree its festive shimmer.

Butta & Booti

Small repeating motifs, such as flowers, paisleys or leaves, scattered across the body of the saree. Booti are the tiniest of them.

Jaal

An all-over net or lattice of connected motifs that covers the body, creating a rich, continuous pattern.

Meenakari

Coloured threads woven alongside the zari, much like enamel work on jewellery, adding pops of pink, green or blue.

Tanchoi

A dense, fine weave with small, closely packed motifs, often in several colours, that gives an almost embroidered look.

Mashru

A satin-faced weave with a smooth, glossy surface and a softer back. Often paired with Banarasi motifs.

Katan

A tightly woven, smooth silk base with a crisp hand and a clean sheen. Strong enough to carry heavy zari work.

Temple border

A row of triangular, spire-like motifs along the border, inspired by South Indian temple towers. Classic in Kanjivaram styles.

Pallu

The decorative end of the saree that drapes over the shoulder. Usually the richest, most detailed part of the weave.

About Our Zari

The thread that makes it shine

Zari is the metallic thread that brings a saree to life, tracing borders, blooming into buttas and filling the pallu with light.

Unless a product page states otherwise, the zari in our sarees is metallic zari with a gold, silver or antique-gold finish. It is not made of pure gold or pure silver. This keeps each saree lighter, easier to care for and fairly priced, while giving you the same festive glow.

Gold zariWarm and bright. The timeless choice for weddings and festivals.
Silver zariCool and elegant. Beautiful on jewel tones, pastels and black.
Antique goldSoft and muted, with a heritage look that feels rich but understated.
  • Keep perfume, deodorant and hairspray away from zari; spray before you drape.
  • Store away from moisture and wrap in soft cotton or muslin to slow tarnishing.
  • Refold along new lines every few months so the zari never cracks on a crease.

Saree Care

Love it today, treasure it for years

Silk and zari reward a little care. Follow these steps and your saree will keep its colour, drape and shine for many celebrations to come.

  1. Air it outUnfold your saree after delivery and let it breathe for a few hours.
  2. Dry cleanAlways dry clean silk and zari sarees, especially for the first wash.
  3. Iron gentlyUse low heat on the reverse side, with a cotton cloth over the zari.
  4. Wrap itStore wrapped in soft cotton or muslin, never in plastic.
  5. RefoldChange the folds every few months to protect the weave.

Do

  • Dry clean silk, Banarasi and Kanjivaram sarees
  • Spray perfume before you drape, never on the saree
  • Store in a cool, dry and dark place
  • Hang it in the shade for a while after wearing, then fold
  • Keep a silica pack or neem leaves in the wardrobe during monsoon

Don't

  • Machine wash or wring silk and zari sarees
  • Dry in direct, harsh sunlight, which can fade colours
  • Iron directly on zari or at high heat
  • Store in plastic covers, which trap moisture
  • Use naphthalene balls in direct contact with zari

The beauty of woven fabric. Woven sarees carry small signs of how they were made: a slight variation in shade from one batch to another, a tiny irregularity in a zari motif or a loose thread at the edge. These are natural characteristics of the weaving process, not defects.

Colours can also look a little different on every screen because of lighting and display settings. Every saree is shown as faithfully as possible. Read our Fabric and Printing Disclaimer for full details.
